Book Bags

Children in Key Stage 1 have been given a book bag. Please send the book bag into school with them every day so that we can monitor and encourage their reading. They will bring home a ‘reading for pleasure book’ each week which may be above the level that they can read. This is to be shared with and even read by an adult at home.

At Somerville Primary School, we deliver our phonics teaching through the Read Write Inc. programme. Children will bring home flashcards, sheets or books linked to the appropriate level for them. We have also got an exciting teaching tool that we can share with you at home to support your child in learning to read. An email will be sent, once a week, from your child’s Read Write Inc teacher to you containing a link to some videos of speed sounds sessions which they will be looking at that week with their teacher. This link will expire after 7 days but can be accessed at home to help reinforce their learning. Some children will also be sent home with handwriting sheets for them to practise and keep at home. Please support us to help your child to read by allowing them to watch and join in with the videos at home.

In school, we have a reading chart and we record how often the children are reading at home. We ask for you to try and read with your children for a minimum of three times a week. This could be their reading for pleasure book, Read Write Inc book or another book. When your child has read, just make sure to record it in their reading record and we will check these every morning.
